5 Malaysian Philanthropists Who Don't Go Unnoticed




Jeffrey Cheah


Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, founder and chairman of Sunway Group, sees some light at the end of the tunnel for businesses following the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak last year, with vaccines and pent-up demand providing a brighter outlook.


Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah AO, Founder and Trustee of the education-focused Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Sunway Group Founder and Chairman, has been named to the definitive list for the third time, having previously been listed in 2009 and 2015.


He is the only Malaysian named to the list this year, as well as the only Malaysian to appear on the list for the past three years. This year's list also includes Jack Ma, co-founder and former executive chairman of Alibaba Group, and Azmin Premji, chairman of Wipro.


Leong Hoy Kum


Leong Hoy Kum is the founder and CEO of Mah Sing Group, one of Malaysia's most diverse real estate developers.


Listed in Kuala Lumpur Mah Sing has construction projects in the Klang Valley and the Iskandar Economic Zone.


Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum, Mah Sing's founder and group managing director, and the MAH Sing Foundation contributed RM480,000 to the construction of the third building at Foon Yew High School in Seri Alam, Johor.


Leong made a personal donation of RM180,000 in addition to the foundation's contribution of RM300,000


In 2018, the cheque presentation ceremony was held at the company's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.


Mah Sing Group Berhad (Mah Sing) and its corporate responsibility arm, Mah Sing Foundation (MSF), have pledged RM4.1 million to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.


Vincent Tan


Vincent Tan stepped down from Berjaya's board of directors in 2012, at the age of 60, but returned as executive chairman five years later.


His son, Robin Tan, has stepped down as chairman but remains CEO.

Tan's business interests range from real estate development to hospitality and gaming, as well as education and financial services.


He also has a stake in privately held U Mobile, a Malaysian 3G mobile phone operator that he hopes to list in 2020.

He acquired a 47 percent stake in Myinteractivelab, which operates the ride-hailing service Dego, in December 2019.


Tan Sri Vincent Tan has announced that he will donate half of his wealth to charity when he dies, while also encouraging other wealthy Malaysians over the age of 70 to do the same. The billionaire stated that doing so would assist the underprivileged in obtaining affordable housing, as housing is a basic human need and is essential for a person's sense of dignity, safety, and inclusion.


Yaacob Khyra


BUDIMAS Charitable Foundation distributed meals to the needy from Perumahan Desa Awam Rejang in Selangor via its Budimas Soup Kitchen.


Tunku Datuk Yaacob Khyra, chairman of the foundation, and Anne Rajasaikaran, principal officer of the foundation, kicked off the event.


It reached out to 50 low-income families, providing them with groceries and 300 meals.


The Budimas Soup Kitchen project primarily serves the homeless and underprivileged communities by providing daily meals and groceries.


The campaign's goal during the Covid-19 pandemic is to lend a helping hand and raise awareness about the importance of helping the poor.


The foundation also intends to help underprivileged children through its three-pronged programme, the Budimas Home, Food, and Education Charity Fund.


Suliana Shamsuddin


Shamsuddin has been the chair of Yayasan Orang Kurang Upaya Kelantan (Yokuk), a support centre in the rural state of Kelantan for people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, blindness, deafness, and other conditions, for more than 15 years. Yokuk has helped or treated over 4,500 children since its inception.
